Species List Development

Selection Criteria

Predicted distribution maps are being created for all vertebrate species that breed in the Alaska or use habitat there for an important part of their life history. “Regular breeders” are defined as those species with documented breeding for at least 5 of the past 10 years (which is often difficult to document). This includes year-round, summer or winter residents, neotropical migratory birds and migratory shorebirds or waterfowl. Birds considered accidental or incidental occurrences during the breeding or non-breeding seasons were generally excluded, but were often treated on a case-by-case basis. Exotic non-game mammals and birds were generally not included; however, in some cases, species were determined individually. We included subspecies in the preliminary list. For mapping purposes, subspecies will only be included when supported as distinct and non-overlapping with either the full species or other subspecies. The final list includes amphibians, mammals, and breeding and resident birds.
