Outreach and Workshops

The botany program works with local, state, and federal organizations to develop and offer educational programs and workshops on Alaska’s flora.

In collaboration with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and UAA’s Professional and Continuing Education Program (PACE) we have produced and offered an ‘Invasive Plants of Alaska’ course for middle-school Science educators in the Anchorage School District.

In 2009 we received funding from the Bureau of Land Management to train youth from Nome and Unalakleet in invasive plant biology, identification, and survey methods. The results of these projects were summarized by Cortés-Burns and Nawrocki 2011 (a, b) and can be downloaded from our Publications page.

We also provide weed identification workshops on request. To date, employees and seasonal staff from local, state, and federal agencies in Alaska, including the Alaska Association of Conservation Districts, Alaska Department of Transportation, National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management, have attended these workshops.
