Abstract:

This is a polygon shapefile summarizing current statewide distribution information for the Leatherback sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea in Alaska, created by the Zoology program of the Alaska Natural Heritage Program, Anchorage, AK. The distribution boundaries are based on currently documented observations and literature, describing general distribution in Alaska. Source scale is 1:63360.

Purpose:

This dataset is intended to describe the current known distribution of the Leatherback sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, in Alaska. This information was developed in association with efforts to describe life history and distribution of species featured in Alaska's Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy, which was prepared by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and reviewed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

ArcGIS software was used to create a new polygon coverage, using the 1:63360 scale coastline of Alaska as background features. Distribution boundaries were drawn on-screen to depict known species distribution in Alaska according to the textual descriptions, observation locations, and range maps provided in the source literature. Where appropriate for freshwater species, the polygons were clipped to the Alaska 1:63360 scale coastline; for marine species, the 1:63360 scale coastline was erased from the polygons. The attribute table was created and populated. *No Element Occurrences (EOs) were created for this species: EO specs describe EO development for foraging areas (the only possible EO type for Alaska) as "reliable observation of multiple adults or juveniles over multiple years"; none of our sightings fit this description, and are instead rare sightings of individuals on the very edge of their range.
