Abstract:

This is a polygon shapefile describing current statewide spawning distribution information for the arctic lamprey, Lampetra camtschatica, created by the Zoology program of the Alaska Natural Heritage Program, Anchorage, AK. The distribution boundaries are based on currently documented observations and literature, describing areas of documented spawning occurrence in Alaska. Source scale is 1:63,000.

Purpose:

This dataset is intended to describe areas of documented spawning occurrence of the arctic lamprey, Lampetra camtschatica, in Alaska. This information was developed in association with efforts to describe life history and distribution of species featured in Alaska's Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy, which was prepared by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and reviewed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

ArcGIS software was used to create a new polygon coverage, using the 1:63000 scale coastline for Alaska and AK major river coverages for background features. Distribution boundaries were drawn on-screen to depict known fish distribution in Alaska according to the textual descriptions and range maps provided in the source literature. Where at least three observations with adequate precision occurred within the same area and beyond the limits of the general distribution, range polygons were extended to include the additional occurrences. Where appropriate for freshwater species, the polygons were clipped to the Alaska 1:63000 scale coastline. The attribute table was created and populated.
