Abstract:

This shapefile contains polygon features summarizing statewide observations for the Wrangell Island red-backed vole, Myodes gapperi wrangeli. This coverage was created by the Zoology program of the Alaska Natural Heritage Program, Anchorage, AK. Sources of the buffered point locations include published scientific papers, unpublished reports and surveys, and museum specimens. Source scale is 1:63,360.

Purpose:

This dataset is intended to describe the current known observations of the Wrangell Island red-backed vole, Myodes gapperi wrangeli. This information was developed in association with efforts to describe life history and distribution of species featured in Alaska's Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy, which was prepared by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and reviewed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Process_Description:

All vertebrate observations were assembled from a variety of sources and evaluated by program zoologists for data accuracy and quality. Excel software was used to assemble observation data tables. These database files were transfered to ArcGIS software and x,y coordinates in each table were used to create a point feature coverage which was buffered by distance accuracy in meters. The resulting shapefiles were displayed over various basemaps to check general locational accuracy and the shapefile was projected into Alaska Albers projection (NAD83). Where necessary, data of different projections were reprojected and merged into one Albers dataset.
