ADF&G Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy (CWCS)
“Featured Species” Status Reports

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has developed their statewide Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy (CWCS). The CWCS is the strategy each state and territory has agreed to produce to qualify State Wildlife Grants, or SWG, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Rather than directing attention and funding to the few species in Alaska known to be in serious decline, the CWCS addresses the conservation needs of a large number of species, species groups, and/or species assemblages, and the habitats that support them. Alaska's CWCS speaks to the conservation needs of hundreds of species and many species assemblages which are not currently addressed by existing programs, such as nongame species.

For a subset of Alaska’s species, the Strategy provides detailed natural history information and measurable conservation goals and strategies. These species and groups are termed “featured species” within the Strategy. The Alaska Natural Heritage Program (AKNHP) has provided detailed information on distribution and abundance, level of protection, conservation status, and conservation and management needs for 97 of the CWCS featured species. Individual species reports for birds, mammals, fishes, amphibians and reptiles, and invertebrates are available by clicking the appropriate photo below. The entire list of 97 "Featured Species" may be found within the Strategy as Appendix 3.

One component of compiling featured species information was to review the conservation status rank assigned to each species by AKNHP at both Global and State levels. Conservation status rank definitions are available here.
