Alaska Wood Frog Monitoring Project

Where are the Wood Frogs?

WE WANT YOU!

We’re looking for CITIZEN SCIENTISTS: individuals, families, clubs, or groups-ANYONE who wants to learn more about amphibians and wetlands in Southcentral and Interior Alaska. The ALASKA WOOD FROG MONITORING PROJECT is a volunteer based effort designed to assess the current status of WOOD FROGS in this area. The goals are to learn where they live, what habitats they’re found in, and to establish a baseline for future monitoring. This project provides a unique and fun opportunity for individuals, groups, schools, and kids of all ages to learn about amphibian ecology and to get outside and explore our wild Alaskan backyard- at the same time contributing valuable information to amphibian researchers in the state.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

We are asking you to help solve these mysteries by gathering baseline data on wood frog distribution and habitat. We provide the background, materials, and, training, and you provide actual data to scientists! To learn more about how you can help please read the PROJECT OVERVIEW.

Now that you have read the project overview, with the background information, you can begin by downloading your DATA FORMS and SURVEY INSTRUCTIONS. The only training you require is to learn the following WOOD FROG CALLING INDEX (this is fun and only takes minutes):

0 No amphibians calling.
1 Individuals can be counted. There is space between calls (approximately 1-6 frogs). [Download mp3 file]
2 Calls of individuals can be distinguished but there is some overlapping of calls (approximately 6-12 frogs). [Download mp3 file]
3 Full chorus. Calls are constant, continuous, and overlapping (more than 12 frogs) [Download mp3 file]

Now that you have heard the WOOD FROG calling Index, you can test yourself with the TRAINING RECORDING [wav file]
